Zambia are through to their sixth Cosafa Cup final after convincingly beating Mozambique 3-0 in the semifinal at the Super Stadium in Attridgeville, Pretoria, on Saturday.
Noah Chivuta opened the scoring in the 35th minute for the defending champs. Emmanuel Mayuka and William Njobvu netted a goal each as the Zambians coasted through the second half.
Chivuta, who plies his trade at Bidvest Wits, pressured the Mozambique defence when a through-ball seemed to escape him, but as the defender cleared the ball Chivuta got his foot to the ball and it flew past goalkeeper Cumbane Marcelino.
Zambia's defence, marshalled by captain Billy Mwanza, was well organised and diligently thwarted the Mambas, as Mozambique are known, every time they attacked. Kennedy Mweene was hardly tested in goal as Mwanza and co kept Mozambique at bay.
Domingues, also known as Elias Pelembe, was the biggest threat to Zambia when Mozambique went forward. However, the SuperSport United player could not do it alone as Mwanza kept a close watch on the tricky number seven.
Mayuka's goal with 20 minutes to go seemed to spur the Mambas on as they attacked with more vigour. Their finishing though was off as Mweene hardly made a save.
The speedy Domingues initiated a slick move that freed him in the penalty area but his first touch was too heavy and Mweene was quick off his line to deny the winger a goal.
Njobvu's strike 10 minutes later dashed any hopes Mozambique had of making a comeback and sealed the victory for Zambia who will be making their fourth consecutive finals appearance. They have won the Cosafa Cup three times since it's inception in 1997.
