An American and an Australian company have drawn up an impressive list of projects in a large number of sectors. They may not all see the light of day.
The American company Ayr Logistics Ltd has recently brought attention to itself by announcing a project to build an oil refinery in Nacala, designed by Millennium Designs Inc of Houston. Ayr Logistics is based in Texas and is headed by Philip Robert Harris, a former serviceman who has spent 26 years in the American army, eventually leaving with the rank of Colonel. It has several ambitious projects in Mozambique, from building a bridge over the port of Maputo to an international airport at Catembe, from a toll road to the South African border and a tourist resort in the south of the country.
Ayr Logistics shares some of these projects with a company based in Australia, Ayr Infrastructure Development, with which it has formed a discreet partnership. This Australian company, headed by Ron Forlee and Terry Edwards, is the international arm of Archiplan Pty Ltd and already has two subsidiaries in Maputo: AYR Resources Moçambique Lda (ION 1217) and Ayr Infrastructuro Lda. The directors of the last of these companies are the Scotsman Colin McCrorie, the Portuguese born South African Luis M. F. Mendes and the Mozambican Hercilio V. de Almeida. After first working for the Mozambican ministry of industry, Hercilio Almeida has been running his own agricultural materials company for a decade, MBC Tratores Lda.
Ayr Infrastructure Development also has a partner in Antananarivo in the person of Geoff Gorrie , who has worked in the press sector for 20 years in Australia before going to live in Madagascar almost ten years ago. Together with another former Australian radio journalist, Geoff Sinclair , he founded PMS Constructions which builds school classrooms for a government programme and prefabricated houses for mining employees.
